Northern Germany: 6^th till 26^th of August 2020

Despite COVID 19, this summer I had the opportunity to cycle in Northern Germany and used that experience as a kind of Pre-CASP exercise. My tour went from Hamburg up to the Baltic Sea (Travemunde) and from there towards Flensburg, along the border of Denmark towards the Wadden Coast of Germany. From Dagebűll I followed the NorthSea-Coast Cycle Route to Bad Nieuweschans, which fitted in the CASP2020 program.

The exercise was focused on: mouth masks and CASP-inventory at beaches and  estuaries.

The mouth masks along the way

Since half of June 2020, in Germany non-medical mouth masks are mandatory inside buildings, public transport and other places where no 1.5 m distance is possible. While cycling I frequently noticed mouth mask lying near the cycling path.  To get an impression about the numbers and distribution along the North Sea Coast Cycle Route,  I took pictures of most of them and toke their coordinates.

My rough personal estimate is that  some 60-70 % of the masks worn in public is disposable.  My findings show that only 3 out of 81 lost ones are non-disposable, which refer to < 4 %. So although still some 30 % of the people wear non-disposables, the ones on the street are in majority the disposable one’s.

So my first conclusions are:

Masks are not purposely thrown away (many look unused in the pictures) but probably lost. I saw a majority of people tie them up loosely at their arm or the handle of their bike.

Everywhere near the path I could find them, but highest concentrations are along popular roads (near camping’s, walking or cycling paths and bathing areas). The high concentration on the bigger roads near Cuxhaven and Bremerhaven are probably due to high industrial activity. These areas were characterized by a lot of other debris as well. In the inner cities hardly mouth masked where found, probably due to regular local council cleaning

Since the percentage of found non-disposable mouth mask is so small, it is advised to support the use of these ones in campaigns by the authorities. Probably people are most likely to collect them when they accidently fly away or fall down.

Omdat mijn CASP 2020 uitgesteld is, hebben mijn vriendin Ellen en ik bedacht om aandacht te schenken aan zwerfafval in de buurt. Tijdens onze lokale wandelingen zijn wij begonnen met het opruimen van afval. Vandaag zijn wij langs de oude spoordijk van Vinkeveen naar Mijdrecht gelopen, een afstand van 4 km en dat leverde een behoorlijke hoeveelheid op. Opvallend hoog scoorde de sigarettenpeuken, achteloos weggeworpen voor de eeuwigheid.

Dear friends, as you all understand due to the COVID-19 crisis I have postponed my CASP2020 project. I am grateful for all the help I received in preparing this project. I really hope that next year there will be another opportunity to realize this project. At this moment concern about our health and care for our fellow man has top priority, but after this crisis we still face our huge environmental problems like the plastic soup.

De kop is eraf. Vandaag de eerste officiële zwerfafval strandopname gedaan samen met Merijn Hougee van Stichting De Noordzee. Mijn doel was de monstername in praktijk te zien en zo te leren hoe ik dit tijdens mijn tocht zelfstandig kan doen. Afgesproken bij restaurant Nederzandt nabij Langevelderslag. Vandaaruit ca. 2 km lopen naar de OSPAR locatie Noordwijk (RWS paal 72.250) en dan in zuidelijke richting 100 m strand markeren en zoeken naar het afval dat direct zichtbaar is. Volgens Merijn was de opbrengt gering, net als vorige week op Terschelling. Ook nurdles gevonden, de gesmolten plastic bolletjes, die als grondstof voor nieuwe (of in dit geval gerecyclede) plastic materialen dienen. Als ze donker zijn betreft het gerecycled plastic. 

Al het afval is ingedeeld in de diverse categorieën  en na afloop als geheel gewogen. Ik heb het meegenomen om nader te onderzoeken, op het voorkomen van de kiezelalgen. Helaas heeft mijn Garmin horloge de coördinaten niet goed vastgelegd. Puntje van aandacht voor de volgende keer.

Kortom het was voor mij  een heerlijke en nuttige tocht en zet aan tot verdere ideeën vorming omtrent de  CASP aanpak.

De Noordzeedagen (3 en 4 oktober 2019)

Dit jaar werden de Noordzeedagen georganiseerd door Rijkswaterstaat met als thema: “Spannende ontwikkeling in de Noordzee – hoe bewaren we de balans”. De Noordzeedagen werden dit jaar in IJmuiden gehouden op Forteiland. Hier heb ik mijn poster gepresenteerd over het CASP project. Mijn poster werd gehonoreerd met prijs voor meest creatieve poster op de Noordzeedagen. Een mooie steun in de rug voor het project.
